Jennifer Proctor, a wispy yet hauntingly beautiful young girl of ten, already qualified as one of those rare saints on earth. She had developed a sense of compassion far beyond her years and, unlike most children her age, is completely unselfish. When she innocently applies a gift that she neither understands nor wants to save a young boy's father from certain death in a racecar accident, Jennie affects the destiny of a whole family in ways she could not have dreamed. Only when her path crosses once again with Ross Becker years later does she learn of the powerful impact her kind-spirited intervention had on so many people and how he must now return her favor.
Set between 1940 and 1963, A Favor Returned captures the changing dynamics of families, communities, and the country in the post-World War II era as prosperity and a confidence bordering on arrogance seemed to envelope the nation. The historical background mingles with the thread of possibility that there truly may be people on this earth who are in the world but not of it, people whose decency and honesty appear too good to be true. Coupled with this is the unsettling possibility that unselfish "saints on earth" may set into motion devastating and tragic consequences. Jennifer Proctor firmly believes that there is a loving God who has placed some people on earth to help others be happier, but time and again she must face the frustrating fact that He doesn't explain how the process is supposed to work. When Ross Becker is faced with the final heart-wrenching dilemma of A Favor Returned, he at last realizes the desperate and utter truth of Jennie's frustration.

I found A Favor Returned to be a page-turner from the very first page. It was a rivoting portrayal of a very descript family in a very descript time period in American history, which Duke Southard beautifully paints with his words. The premise of the supernatural presence intertwined within a very real young girl with no idea of the lack of boundaries of her gift made this novel one I couldn't put down. I just wanted to see what Jennie could do next! Like life, Jennies gift, and Duke Southards book have unforseen twists and turns that keep the reader intrigued, and at times worried, but always entertained!Product details

A Favor Returned Duke Southard 9781604949643 Books Reviews
This reverent yet intense and emotional novel is set primarily in the burgeoning post-WWII era and constructed around true-life occurrences. The story illustrates how one act, whether motivated by greed or grace, can ripple throughout a lifetime.
It's Memorial Day 1950. Al Stuart and Ethan Becker have completed their usual superstitious, pre-race check-each having driven the other's car-and are in their places among the entrants at the starting line. For young Ross Becker, this is a momentous day since his ill-tempered and unapproachable father has granted him a first-time place of honor in the pits. Ross has a special affection for Al Stuart; and as he climbs to the roof of a pick-up truck for a good view of the course, he debates which man he would most like to see cross the finish line first. Ethan's wife Faye, in her usual race-day fret, sits alone and out of sight of the track fingering her rosary with more than the normal amount of trepidation. She knows this afternoon has the potential to change everything. Bob Proctor and his daughter Jennie are finding their places in the grandstand among the other thrill-seekers. This race has become an annual outing for them since the death of Bob's wife in childbirth ten years ago. The community views the two as an odd pair he, a doting and overprotective father; she, a young girl with an angelic aura and a curious gift of insight. Today, Jennie's gift will mean a life is spared a favor that will require future sacrifice.
With integral back stories and smooth time transitions the author allows us to form a personal relationship, both positive and negative, with each unique character. It is a tale of actions and outcomes which may challenge your human skepticism.
I really enjoyed this book. I found the characters to be very interesting and believable. It was intriguing to see how Jennie's well-intentioned good deed could change so drastically the lives of others. I couldn't put the book down because I realy wanted to find out what would happen to these people I had come to care about. Even after finishing the book, I still find myself thinking about Jennie and Ross and how she affected so many lives with her special gift. I would recommend this book highly.
A Favor Returned is an exciting book that balances the darkest side of life with the hope and fulfilment of the bright side. It's a masterful work that kept me reading with plot twists that were exciting and unexpected, yet completely believable in context. The characters were well drawn and complex - not cookie cutter types pasted in. I highly recommend Duke's latest effort. Five stars f'sur!

A very touching and gripping story, from the heartbreak of the boy's and his mother's relationship with his dysfunctional father, to the outcome of his initial contact with Jennie, the girl with special powers who saved his father's life. Never predictable, especially the ending, I was compelled to keep reading the whole way. Thank you, Duke Southard, for writing this book!
My husband knew the author. He spent his childhood in the same town and it was fun to read about things in the town and names I was familiar with. I like the story very much. It was a fun read. I made the selection because of the author. His book was featured
in our high school newsletter.
What a great book with such vivid detail and dramatic intrigue! The characters are very believable, despite Jennie's almost spiritual gift. Duke Southard also adeptly uses historical detail that parallels the characters through their lives. A very moving and intriguing novel. I can't wait for his next one!
